How to Maintain Healthy Skin This Winter

How to maintain radiant, healthy and glowing skin this winter and beyond!

As the colder months and darker nights move in, you’ll probably start to notice changes to your skin - but there are things you can do to maintain your skin’s heath and keep it looking its best.

Perhaps the summer months have resulted in some pigment changes. Maybe your skin feels dry due to the temperature change, or perhaps an existing skin condition like eczema has flared up.

From the plummeting temperatures and icy, biting winds to central heating, the change of season can really take its toll on your complexion. So what can you do?

It All Starts with Skincare

I believe everything starts with a good foundation, and that foundation is skincare. At The Secret Garden, we tailor our skin health packages to adapt to your skin year-round, so it is functioning and looking its best.

We use medical-grade, scientifically proven ingredients that work at a cellular level to get your skin working for you, not against you.

Advanced Skin Treatments for Winter Radiance

At The Secret Garden Skin Clinic in Winchester, we offer a range of advanced treatments to restore and rejuvenate your skin during the winter months. Whether you want to target specific concerns like pigmentation, fine lines, or uneven skin tone, our expert team is here to guide you to the perfect solution.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

If your skin is looking dull, or you’re noticing more prominent signs of ageing, our Laser Skin Resurfacing treatments can help. Laser resurfacing is a non-invasive way to reduce wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scars by promoting collagen production and improving the overall texture of your skin. Perfect for winter when your skin needs that extra boost of radiance!

NeoGen Plasma for Youthful Skin

Another fantastic treatment to consider this season is NeoGen Plasma, which uses nitrogen plasma technology to regenerate skin from the inside out. It helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots while improving skin firmness. This is an ideal winter treatment as it stimulates your skin's natural repair processes without the need for invasive procedures.

Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative treatments, hailed as the “injectables of the future,” use advanced biotechnology to stimulate the body’s natural rejuvenation processes. Two exciting options are polynucleotides and exosomes. Polynucleotides, derived from fish DNA, are injected superficially to regenerate skin tissue, improve lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scars, and boost collagen production and blood flow. They’re particularly effective for dark circles and scar healing. Exosomes are nano-sized messengers that repair damaged cells and promote collagen and cell renewal, often delivered via microneedling. Both treatments can be used alone or alongside other aesthetic procedures for enhanced skin rejuvenation.

Chemical Peels for Fresh, Glowing Skin

Winter is the ideal time to refresh your skin with a Chemical Peel. Our peels exfoliate the surface layer of the skin to reveal a smoother, more even complexion underneath. Whether you’re dealing with pigmentation, dullness, or clogged pores, a chemical peel can help you shed those dead skin cells and restore your skin’s youthful glow. Our tailored peels are perfect for your individual skin type and concerns, leaving you radiant throughout the winter months.

Wear SPF, Even in Winter

One of the first things I advise all my patients is to wear SPF every day, year-round. It really is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to halt ageing in its tracks and protect your skin.

People think they only need to wear sunscreen when it’s hot outside, but that’s a fallacy. The winter sun is just as strong. The sun has two types of damaging rays – UVA and UVB. UVB is what gives us a sunburn on a sunny day. UVA is responsible for 80% of skin ageing and can even penetrate grey cloudy skies and glass. This type of radiation is present in winter as well as in summer.

Choosing a formulation that suits your skin type is the number one priority, and I don’t mean an over-the-counter moisturiser that says it has SPF in it. This is a marketing gimmick, which doesn’t actually provide what your skin needs to protect you from the harmful radiation in the sun.

I’ve tried many products over the years. My skin leans towards being dry, especially in winter, so my absolute favourite is AlumierMD Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF. It has a versatile tint, which gives a dewy finish and a golden glow, perfect for when you are wrapped up warm in a hat and scarf and want to look fresh-faced and natural. It doesn’t suit every skin type, but that’s why I am here – to help find the right one just for you.
