How to avoid and get rid of chest wrinkles and pigmentation

Your chest, also known as the décolletage, is often one of the first areas to show the signs of ageing. The skin here is thinner than the skin on your face and, because it sits like a little shelf to the sunshine, it experiences just as much sun damage but rarely gets the same level of care.

Over time, many women start to notice fine lines, pigmentation, red broken veins or crepey skin. Before long, favourite dresses stay at the back of the wardrobe, necklines get a little higher, and scarves become something to hide behind rather than an accessory to enjoy.

The good news is that it doesn't have to be that way.

Looking after your skin isn't about vanity. It's about feeling confident enough to wear what you love and feeling happy in your own skin. Whether you're hoping to prevent changes or improve skin that's already showing signs of ageing, there's so much you can do.

What causes chest wrinkles and pigmentation?

The chest naturally ages in the same way as the face, but because the skin is thinner, the changes often become noticeable sooner.

The biggest causes include:

  • Sun exposure: The chest receives years of UV exposure, which breaks down collagen and elastin while triggering pigmentation. In fact, UV damage is responsible for the vast majority of visible skin ageing.

  • Natural ageing and hormonal changes: As we get older, collagen and elastin naturally decline, making the skin thinner, less resilient and more prone to wrinkling.

  • Sleeping position: If you sleep on your side, repeated creasing can gradually become etched into the skin, creating deeper vertical lines over time.

  • Stopping your skincare at the neck: Many people invest in excellent skincare for their face but never bring those products down onto their chest, leaving this area unprotected and untreated.

The concerns are often exactly the same as those we see on the face, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Pigmentation

  • Red broken veins

  • Crepey skin

  • Uneven skin tone

How can you avoid chest wrinkles and pigmentation?

As I always say, prevention is better than cure.

The biggest mistake I see is people treating their face beautifully but forgetting everything below the jawline. Your face, neck and chest should always be cared for together.

Some simple habits can make a huge difference.

Wear SPF every day

If your chest is exposed, apply a broad-spectrum SPF every morning, just as you would on your face. This is one of the best ways to protect your collagen and prevent pigmentation from developing.

Extend your skincare routine

Your vitamin C, retinoids and hydrating products shouldn't stop at your neck.

Vitamin C helps brighten the skin while supporting collagen production and reducing pigmentation. Retinoids encourage healthy skin turnover, improve collagen and elastin production, and help soften fine lines over time.

Keeping the skin well hydrated also helps minimise the appearance of lines and maintain a healthy, radiant glow.

Be mindful of repeated creasing

If chest wrinkles are becoming a concern, changing your sleeping position where possible or varying the side you sleep on can help reduce repeated creasing.

The earlier you begin caring for this area, the easier it is to maintain healthy, glowing skin.

How do you get rid of chest wrinkles and pigmentation?

If your chest is already showing signs of ageing, don't worry. There is so much we can do.

The aim is to improve the health of the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin, evening out pigmentation, increasing hydration and creating smoother, brighter skin.

Everything starts with good skincare, but professional treatments can take those results to another level.

Build strong skincare foundations

A consistent skincare routine remains the foundation of healthy skin.

Medical-grade skincare containing ingredients such as vitamin C, retinoids and hydrating products helps support collagen production, improve skin turnover and maintain brighter, healthier skin over time.

Consider professional skin treatments

Different treatments target different concerns, which is why we often combine them as part of a personalised treatment plan.

IPL

IPL is fantastic for reducing pigmentation, redness and sun damage. It helps create a brighter, more even skin tone while improving the overall appearance of the chest.

NeoGen Plasma

NeoGen is one of my favourite treatments for the chest. It stimulates collagen and elastin, improves pigmentation and helps tighten crepey skin, leaving the skin looking smoother, healthier and more youthful.

RF Microneedling

RF microneedling helps boost hydration while stimulating collagen production. It's wonderful for improving fine lines, tightening the skin and restoring a brighter, healthier glow.

Why should you treat your face, neck and chest together?

One of the most common things I see is someone with beautifully rejuvenated facial skin, but a neck and chest that have been completely forgotten.

The result is that while the face continues to improve, the chest simply stays where it is. It doesn't necessarily get worse, but it doesn't get better either, creating a noticeable difference between the two.

Your face, neck and chest should always be treated as one canvas.

Whether it's applying sunscreen, vitamin C or retinoids, or investing in professional treatments, caring for these areas together creates a much more natural, balanced result.

When we create a personalised skin plan, we're always thinking about the whole picture. We consider your skin, your lifestyle and even the clothes you love wearing, because healthy, glowing skin should give you confidence across every area that's visible.

If you've found yourself reaching for higher necklines, wrapping a scarf around your shoulders or leaving a favourite dress hanging at the back of the wardrobe because you've lost confidence in your chest, you're certainly not alone.

The wonderful thing is that these changes don't have to define how you feel.

With good skincare, daily sun protection and the right professional treatments, you can dramatically improve the health, texture and appearance of your skin.

Looking after your skin isn't about chasing perfection. It's about feeling comfortable, confident and happy in your own skin.
